Jyoti Malhotra Arrested for Espionage: YouTube Video Sparks Investigation

YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra arrested under espionage charges after posting vlog with expelled Pakistani official. Investigation underway.

In a shocking revelation that has stirred national security discussions, Jyoti Malhotra, a content creator from Hisar, Haryana, has been arrested on charges of espionage and endangering India's sovereignty. The arrest comes after it was discovered that Jyoti allegedly maintained links with Pakistani officials and unintentionally exposed herself through a publicly posted YouTube vlog.

Who is Jyoti Malhotra?

Known online by her channel name "Travel with Jo", Jyoti Malhotra was a rising influencer with a growing audience for her travel and cultural vlogs. However, beneath the surface of lifestyle content, investigators claim she had developed ties with individuals allegedly connected to Pakistani intelligence services.

According to Shashank Kumar Sawan, Superintendent of Police (SP), Hisar, Jyoti was being “groomed as an asset” by Pakistani handlers and had previously visited Pakistan on what appeared to be sponsored trips. Authorities are currently investigating whether these visits were part of a larger plan involving information exchange.

The YouTube Video That Exposed Her

The most damning evidence came from her own channel. In a 15-minute vlog uploaded in 2024, Jyoti documented her visit to the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi for an iftar dinner organized to mark Pakistan’s National Day. What seemed like an innocent cultural event took a controversial turn when she included detailed footage from inside the event.

She was seen greeting and conversing with a man she identified as “Danish ji”, later confirmed by Indian officials to be Ehsan-ur-Rahim, a staffer at the Pakistan High Commission. Danish was expelled by India in May 2025 after being declared a persona non grata on espionage charges. In the same video, he is seen introducing Jyoti to other Pakistani officials and referencing her subscriber base.

Legal Trouble Under National Security Laws

Following the circulation of the video and ongoing investigations, Jyoti was arrested and charged under several sections including:

  • Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) Section 152 – Pertaining to acts that endanger the unity and integrity of India
  • Official Secrets Act, 1923 – Sections 3, 4, and 5 – For allegedly handling and sharing sensitive or classified information

She has been remanded in police custody for five days to assist in further interrogation. Authorities are also questioning other YouTubers and online influencers who were reportedly in contact with Jyoti or her alleged handlers.

Possible Links to Pahalgam Attack

One of the more alarming angles of the investigation is the suspicion that Jyoti was in Pakistan shortly before the Pahalgam terror attack. While no direct link has been confirmed, officials are reviewing communication records and travel logs to determine whether there is any connection between her visit and the incident.

Why This Case Matters

This case shines a light on how soft platforms like YouTube and social media can be exploited for intelligence operations. What may appear as harmless cultural exchanges can sometimes mask deeper motives. It also underscores the importance of transparency and responsibility for creators dealing with cross-border engagements.

The arrest of Jyoti Malhotra is not an isolated incident but part of a broader concern involving digital surveillance and foreign intelligence targeting Indian creators, influencers, and journalists.

Conclusion

While the investigation continues, the Jyoti Malhotra case serves as a wake-up call — both for online creators and national authorities. The intersection of digital influence and national security is more fragile than ever. Authorities urge influencers and media personnel to exercise caution and report suspicious contacts or invitations, especially from foreign embassies and operatives.
